Manufacturer Caring for Environment

Environmental safety was again discussed at Yokohama’s car tire factory located in the Lipetsk SEZ. This time, however, words were backed up with actions. Yokohama organized a traditional environmental event held as part of the Green Wave global campaign on 22 May 2018, the date proclaimed by the United Nations as the International Day for Biological Diversity. The event’s purpose was to raise awareness of biodiversity issues, conservation and maintenance among children and youths. The Green Wave is organized annually by the factory since 2014. Its first participants were students of local schools and employees’ children who learned about the importance of biodiversity for the planet’s future and contributed to diversity restoration by planting young trees at the factory’s site.
This year’s event involved students of the Voronezh State University of Forestry Technology, freshmen and trainees of the Lipetsk SEZ Management Company. Together with Yokohama’s employees, the participants were investigating the importance of biodiversity conservation, causes of biodiversity loss, and measures to be taken for its restoration. One of these measures – tree planting – was implemented by Yokohama’s employees and guests. The tree planting process was unusual this time since the factory’s territory was planted with experimental Scots pine seedlings with pre-designed qualities. The seedlings were grown and selected by scientists from the Voronezh State University of Forestry Technology. This is another project of the University and Yokohama after the first experiment in pine planting on 26 October 2017. The biometrics analysis of pines planted in October gave positive results as 92% of seedlings adapted and developed young shoots. The purpose of Yokohama’s environmental events is to restore biological diversity around its Lipetsk factory and reduce an adverse impact of tire production on the environment.
